Councillor Mike Shanks
Born in London, England, I moved with my parents and brother to Victoria, BC in 1948. Educated at Malvern House Private School, S.J. Willis Junior High School and graduating from Victoria High School, I then attended Victoria College.
Over the following years I had a variety of jobs, including at the Queen's Printer Department and Woodward's Mayfair Store. In 1969, I moved to mainland British Columbia and worked for the Assessment Commissioner's Office, out of the Government Agent's Office in New Westminster. In 1975, I moved to the newly formed B.C. Assessment Office in Sechelt. That is also when I moved my wife Gay and young family here.
In 1982, I started my own appraisal company. Always wanting to be involved in my community, I joined the Sunshine Coast Lions Club in 1978. Over the years I have been a participant in Neighbourhood Associations, the Sechelt Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Business Association. As a Charter Member of the Coaster's Car Club, I was instrumental in bringing the Sleepy Hollow Rod Run and Car Show to downtown Sechelt.
My political involvement started in 1986 with the incorporation of the District of Sechelt. Since that time, I have been privileged to serve with seven different Mayors, and at the end of this term, I will have served Sechelt for 23 years. Community involvement has always been my focus. Being part of the solution to community issues and personal contact with the electorate has always been important to me.
