Mayor Bruce Milne
First elected Mayor of the District of Sechelt in November 1996, I was re-elected to office in 1999 and was the first Mayor in the history of the District of Sechelt to serve two terms. I stepped down in 2002 and returned to political life in November, 2014 when I was elected for my third term as Mayor.
Born on Vancouver Island and raised in the Greater Victoria area, I attended public school at Langford Elementary, Cedar Hill Junior Secondary and Mount Douglas Senior Secondary. When I first enrolled at the University of Victoria, I studied Music Theory and Composition. I later earned two degrees in Political Science [B.A. 1982; M.A. 1983] at the University of Victoria and a Ph.D. in Political Economy at the University of Toronto (1990).
My professional life includes university teaching and research (Public Policy, Public Administration and Political Theory) as well as several years as a lead Negotiator for Canada on Aboriginal Treaties in British Columbia. I believe that service to the community is essential for a fully developed life and have spent many years as a volunteer in areas of social needs (Sechelt Food Bank), community (Davis Bay Community Association) and arts and culture (Sunshine Coast Arts Council).
As a Mayor, treaty negotiator and academic researcher I have been involved in many aspects of community economic development and have been recognized for my leadership in the development of rural economies. I have an extensive record of public speaking on local government, treaty negotiations, environmental and economic issues.
