The District of Sechelt has engaged the services of a Consultant to undertake the transportation planning, urban planning, and engineering work to produce a detailed design for the sidewalk and parking improvements along the west side of Wharf Avenue between Dolphin Avenue and Cowrie Street.
The east side of Wharf Avenue was previously completed with a wider sidewalk, parking lane and
streetlights however the west side of Wharf Avenue has nonstandard angled parking causing
vehicles to back onto the Highway resulting in safety issues. There is also no sidewalk or curb and
gutter within the Highway right of way which means pedestrians lack adequate protection. This is
the main entrance to the Sechelt downtown core and beautification would benefit the Sechelt
community as well as encouraging a vibrant and active downtown area. The proposed upgrade will
provide safe parking and wider sidewalks for residents and visitors. The existing road structure for
the existing parking area has reached the end of its life cycle.
