Campfires
Within the District of Sechelt, campfires for cooking and or warmth are permitted as long as all regulations of the Sechelt Fire Protection District (Fire Department) and Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Forests are observed.
Check the Forest Service of B.C. Wildfire Management website for the current campfire status. The Sunshine Coast is in the Coastal Fire Centre area.
Backyard Burning
Backyard burning is prohibited at all times in the District of Sechelt and violators are subject to a fine of $200 per offense and per day. Outdoor burning of the following materials is prohibited:
-
construction waste (including but not limited to drywall and wood materials, particle board, paper, plastic, roofing materials and paint)
-
debris ( vegetative matter targeted for disposal).
-
domestic waste ( household material and food waste garbage)
-
garden refuse ( grass or other clippings, leaves, tree and shrub prunings, cuttings, and similar materials being waste from garden growth)
-
toxic materials ( includes rubber tires, tar, asphalt shingles, batteries, electrical wire insulation, various plastic compositions, and all other similar substances which produce heavy black smoke).
The only exception to this is in the case of land clearing, where the land clearing debris has been brought to one or more areas of the property by machine, and the burning is being done with a valid permit issued on authority of the Sechelt Fire Department for compliance with fire safety; and in compliance with Environmental Management Act Open Burning Smoke Control Regulation, in environmental conditions consistent with parameters set out by the Ministry responsible for environmental conditions as determined by the Ventilation Index.
Contact the Sechelt Fire Department at 604-885-7017 for more information on burning regulations and obtaining a burning permit.
