Home Occupations

The District of Sechelt supports the establishment of appropriate home-based businesses in residential zones.  Sechelt's Zoning Bylaw restricts the type of business activities that are allowed to operate in a residential neighbourhood, limits the size of the area used for business purposes, and regulates parking and storage impacts.

If you are interested in operating a home occupied business, you will also need to apply for a business licence with the District of Sechelt. Businesses operated in residences are subject to specific regulations.  Please read Sechelt Zoning Bylaw No. 25, 1987 for full details.

Section 307 of Sechelt's Zoning Bylaw outlines the restrictions and permitted uses of a home operated business. Please ensure that you have read and understand all the bylaw requirements for home occupied businesses before undertaking any business at home.

Business Licence Fees

The Business Licence fee is $125.00 for a business in the basic category or $175.00 for a business in two or more categories. Fees are charged on an annual basis, and are non-refundable once a licence has been approved and issued.

We now offer an “Inter-Community” Business Licence which is an additional fee of $50 offered to Sechelt based businesses that also conduct business in the Town of Gibsons and/or Sechelt Indian Band. This allows businesses to pay for one licence and no longer have to purchase a licence in multiple locations. Please check the inter-community box on the application when applying.

Business Licences are issued for one calendar year, January 1st to December 31st. The licence fee is pro-rated on August 1st (for new businesses only).

As per the District of Sechelt's Business Licence Bylaw No. 520, 2012 there is no longer a $25.00 early payment discount.

Business licence fees may be paid in cash or by cheque, Interac, Visa and MasterCard.

For more information on business licence requirements, please contact the District of Sechelt.
