Canada Day in Sechelt – A Day of Reflection and Celebration

Sechelt, BC – The District of Sechelt has finalized plans for a physically-distanced Canada Day event. District staff worked with Vancouver Coastal Health to develop a program of events that comply with all current Provincial COVID-19 health requirements.

The possibility of cancelling the annual event was given careful consideration by the Canada Day Committee. The District of Sechelt recognizes that this year it is more important than ever for Canadians to take pride and celebrate the good things our country affords us while also recognizing the legacy of harm that has been caused to our Indigenous communities.  Instead of cancelling plans, the District of Sechelt will encourage participants to use the day as an opportunity for reflection and learning. In the spirit of reconciliation, the District of Sechelt welcomes participants in the Canada Day parades to wear orange in recognition of the collective pain, grief and trauma that residential schools continue to cause to this day.
