Advocacy

Your elected officials are responsible for policy decisions on essential local services such as sewer systems, parks and roads, as well as land use and development. Many services and social issues are outside of the jurisdiction of local government, however Mayor and Council are able to advocate on behalf of their constituents to other levels of government.

Your elected officials are here to hear you – email council@sechelt.ca or call 604-885-1986 to contact the mayor and councillors directly.

UBCM

The Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) was formed over 100 years ago to provide a common voice for local government in their advocacy with federal and provincial governments, as well as providing a forum for sharing experiences and establishing best practice.

Each year UBCM hosts a convention where ideas are shared and member municipalities vote on resolutions. Prior to the annual convention local government elected officials have the opportunity to meet with provincial cabinet ministers and provincial ministry staff to discuss topics that are of concern or interest to their constituents.

For the past three years, elected officials across the Sunshine Coast have worked together to present shared concerns to provincial government ministers, strengthening their voices by representing the entire Sunshine Coast. This year the District of Sechelt requested eight meetings on the following topics.
