Hackett Park currently has two tennis courts that also have lines for pickleball. The Sunshine Coast Pickleball Association proposed to Council to permanently convert the two tennis courts to:
• 1 tennis court
• 4 pickleball courts
On May 27, 2021 staff posted signs at the Hackett Park courts directing court users to an online survey. The survey remained active up until June 17, 2021 and had 236 responses, 153 of which came from District of Sechelt residents.
What we heard:
The following were some of the questions asked in the public survey.
When asked what neighbourhood they lived in, 35% were located outside of Sechelt.
Of the respondents who indicated they live in Sechelt, 95% responded that they play a court sport at Hackett.
• 25% responded they play tennis and 75% responded they play pickleball.
• 76% responded that they belonged to a pickleball or tennis organization, club, or league.
85% of respondents listed car as their mode of transportation to get to Hackett Park.
When asked if they were in favour of converting one tennis court to four dedicated pickleball courts:
• 78% were in favour and 22% were opposed.
• 93% of respondents expressed the desire for regulation sized courts/layout.
These results were published in a report to Council on August 4, 2021. The report can be found here, under Item 10.3
At this same meeting, Council resolved:
"That staff be directed to proceed with creating a single shared use tennis/pickleball court and two dedicated pickleball courts at Hackett Park; and that the expenses be included in the 2022 budget deliberation process."
"That Sunshine Coast Pickleball Association be invited to solicit their members for funds to go towards the additional works to be done at Hackett Park pickleball and tennis court facility by November 1, 2021."
