Downtown Wildfires
Two wildfires located downtown in the past week have raised concerns about safety for homes and people. The District of Sechelt is working closely with Sechelt Fire Department, RCMP and other organizations to reduce risks of fire. Preventative measures are taking place, including:
- Speaking with unhoused residents and helping to remove flammable items such as wood and propane.
- Directing a private security company to increase patrols around the unhoused encampment and vacant private property next to it.
- Installing “Fire Ban” signage along the fence of the vacant private property.
- Scheduling fire extinguisher training with residents of the encampment and RainCity.
The safety of all residents is paramount and the District is doing everything we can within our jurisdiction to help people feel safe within their homes and neighbourhoods.
For non-emergencies, residents are encouraged to contact:
- RCMP non-emergency line via online form or phone 604-885-2266
- District’s community safety email.
For any emergency, smoke or fire detection or imminent danger, please contact 911.
