Open Letter: Council Apology to SCRD

On Thursday, November 30, 2023, the District of Sechelt Council sent the following letter to the Sunshine Coast Regional District:

Dear SCRD Board and staff,

Public Apology

The District of Sechelt Council has recently become aware of a workplace incident involving Mayor John Henderson and SCRD staff from April, 2023. The Mayor released a public statement about this on November 16, 2023 and SCRD Chairperson Lee responded on November 17, 2023. Although the Mayor has expressed his regret related to this incident he has not, as noted by Chairperson Lee, offered an express public apology to the SCRD and its involved staff. The absence of a public apology from our Mayor concerns the rest of District Council.

As such, the District of Sechelt Council sincerely apologizes, on behalf of the District of Sechelt, to the SCRD and its involved staff for this workplace incident. The District hopes that by offering this public apology that the SCRD and its staff can move forward and work together with the District on matters that concern all of us on the Sunshine Coast. Regarding this incident, Sechelt Council intends to take no further action.

On November 22, 2023, District Council re-affirmed Alton Toth and Darren Inkster as SCRD Directors and selected Dianne McLauchlan and Adam Shepherd as Alternate Directors.
