BC Government News Release
After years of advocating for more supports for mental health, addiction and housing in Sechelt, this announcement aims in the right direction. Much of the work of Council is not always splashy and exciting, but rather through making connections, starting conversations and voicing community concerns with other governments and agencies.
The desperate need for more resources to provide housing and mental health and addictions support is part of what Council has heard from the Community Safety Task Force. The BC Housing announcement made today will provide us with this opportunity, but we know we have to do a better job in keeping community members better informed and up to date on what is happening around mental health in our community, including the services offered and what they are responsible and accountable for.
We know the community has a lot of questions – you aren’t alone in that. We will work hard to find the answers to these questions. The partnership between housing and health was what was needed and that is what we are receiving. Local officials acknowledge that community dialogue is essential as this project moves forward and will help shape how these vital services in Sechelt.
Council’s advocacy efforts do not end with this announcement. We continue to work with the Province on community concerns related to added site security measures at the existing facilities, as well as further details on BC Housing’s future strategy for facility operation here in Sechelt. We also continue to work with the RCMP and advocate at both the provincial and federal levels about the judicial system and its flaws.
We look forward to seeing the success of these projects by encouraging the contractor to employ local trades people for construction, as well as seeing building operators provide safe environments to those seeking housing and support, as well as for residents who live nearby. We want this supportive housing and complex care housing to be a success story for everyone in the community and to serve as a model for collaboration and resilience in addressing the complex social issues we have in our community.
