Howe Sound Mill Closure - Statement from Mayor and Council

Mayor and Council are disappointed by the announcement that the Howe Sound Pulp and Paper Mill and Bayview Fibre facility in Port Mellon will be indefinitely idled, affecting approximately 400 employees and their families. This decision will have significant impacts across the Sunshine Coast. Our thoughts are with the workers, families, businesses, and communities affected by this news. For generations, the mill has played an important role in our region's economy and identity. While the challenges facing the forestry sector extend beyond our community, the effects of this closure will be felt locally and deeply.

The District of Sechelt will continue to work with regional partners, shíshálh Nation, local governments, industry, and senior levels of government to advocate for support for affected workers and families and to strengthen the long-term resilience of our regional economy. The Sunshine Coast is a strong and connected community. We know residents will come together to support one another during this difficult time.
