Sechelt Receives $500,000 Grant
Sechelt has secured $500,000 through the Union of British Columbia Municipalities’ Strategic Priorities Fund to advance its asset management program. The grant will go towards creating a district-wide plan that will look at inventory, condition, service level, cost, risk and replacement cycle of district-owned assets.
"Asset management is knowing what infrastructure we own, its condition, and planning ahead so we can repair and replace over its lifecycle and ultimately, sustainably fund the service," said Meghan Lee, Director of Engineering and Operations. "The plan is an important tool and essentially a road map that helps us set budgets so that community services remain resilient, sustainable and capable of meeting the needs of current and future generations.”
Assets include:
- Roads and sidewalks
- Wastewater pipes and infrastructure
- Drainage infrastructure
- Parks and playgrounds
- Municipal-owned buildings
- Vehicles and equipment
- Streetlights
The District anticipates the work to start in 2027. This is one of 54 approved projects, announced by federal and provincial governments along with the Union of BC Municipalities.
The fund comes through the Build Communities Strong Fund Community stream, a transfer-based program that provides $2.5 billion per year in funding to communities across Canada. The Province of British Columbia receives over $326 million annually from this stream, which is administered by the Union of BC Municipalities and distributed to local governments through the Community Works Fund, Strategic Priorities Fund, and Metro Vancouver Regional Fund.
