Recycle BC has recently changed how shredded paper is accepted. If you are recycling shredded office paper, you must place the waste in a paper bag or cardboard box. Thank you for your cooperation.

Waste Collection

The District of Sechelt supplies every home with an organics bin, blue bin and garbage bin.

Cancelled Collection Days

Although it's rare, sometimes collection days are cancelled due to weather events, staffing shortages or mechanical issues. If the collection day in your zone is cancelled, please check our news page to find out about a pick up recovery plan for your zone.

We do our best to notify about cancellations immediately. We will send out notifications and reminders via the Sechelt Citizen App, post to the news page of our website and to our social media channels (Facebook and Instagram). Please check one of these areas to find out about a pick up recovery plan. Subscribe to our news and receive an email every time we post. When in doubt, chat with a neighbour or give us a call on your missed collection day.

Organics Recycling
  • Use only compostable bags for your organics food waste recycling. Biodegradable bags and other types are not permitted.

For more information please view our Organic Recycling Guide.

Yard Waste

  •  All Yard Waste must be contained in paper yard waste collection bag or neatly bundled with compostable string.

For more information please view our Yard Waste Guide.

Blue Bin Recycling
  • Please put your Blue Bin recyclables loose in the tote. Do not put any blue bin recyclables in plastic bags.
  • If you are recycling shredded office paper, you must place the waste in a paper bag or cardboard box.
  • Extra recycling can be put out with your bin in a second clean bin or a cardboard box.

Items not permitted. Your blue bin maybe left behind unemptied if it contains any of the following items:

  • Books
  • Soft plastics like plastic bags, zip lock bags, seran wrap. Do not put recycling in a clear plastic bag.
  • Glass of any kind
  • Hard plastic products, like toys or a frisbee
  • Styrofoam
  • Small appliances
  • Propane tanks, including small disposable tanks
  • Batteries

*All items above can be taken to Salish Soils for recycling.

Garbage
  • Garbage is picked up biweekly;
  • All garbage materials must be completely contained in garbage bags and placed in the landfill tote. No loose garbage will be collected;
  • Overflowing totes will not be collected; and
  • An extra can or bag requires a garbage tag;
    • Garbage tags may be purchased from municipal hall located above the library, for $4.00 each; and,
    • Make sure the tag is easily visible on each extra bag or can placed at the curb.

New waste bins can be delivered to your address. Bin replacement costs will be charged to the address in the request. Where bin requests are for newly constructed homes where no bin has been previously assigned or the bin was damaged by the collection contractor the cost will be waived.

Waste Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Only one of my bins was picked up, what do I do?
Waste Management has from 8:00a.m. to 6:00p.m. to collect bins on your scheduled day. Waste Management may use different trucks for collection of different bins, if only one bin is collected, leave the other at the curb until 6:00p.m. on your collection day.
Q: It is after 6:00pm and my waste was not collected, what do I do?
If it is after 6:00pm, you must bring your bin back to the wildlife proof enclosure that you store it in regularly. Then, contact us so we can investigate the situation.
Q: One of my bins is damaged, what do I do?
If one of your bins is damaged, a replacement bin can be requested by contacting us

Please note that charges may apply.

Q: I didn't have my bins out on time and I missed collection, what do I do?

Waste Management is unable to come back to completed routes due to bins not being out on time. Please bring your bins back to your wildlife proof enclosure.

You may take your waste or recycling to one of the appropriate disposal companies:

Q: How do I protect my waste from wildlife?

If service disruptions occur, please bring your waste to a wildlife proof enclosure if it was not collected.

To learn more about reducing wildlife and human interactions please visit our Bears and Wildlife page. Thank you for keeping our wildlife and neighbours safe.

Q: How can I find my collection schedule?

To view your collection schedule please view our Waste Wizard or our Collection Schedule and Routes page.

Q: I need an extra garbage bin, what do I do?

Contact us for information about obtaining a second garbage bin. Please note that an annual charge may apply.

Garbage tags can also be purchased at Municipal Hall for an extra can or bag. Tags are $4.00 each.

Q: I need an extra recycling bin, what do I do?
Each residence is allowed up to 3 recycling bins. Contact us for information on obtaining another bin.
