  • Rallying to Keep Daycare Spaces Open

    LOCAL GOVERNMENTS RALLY TO KEEP INFANT/TODDLER DAYCARE SPACES OPEN

    With the threat of losing twenty daycare spaces for children aged 0-3 years, the District of Sechelt and Town of Gibsons are advocating to all levels of government to take immediate action to address the growing crisis in early childhood education across rural and coastal communities.

    The recent announcement of the closure of infant-toddler programs at both the West Sechelt and Gibsons YMCA facilities has left families scrambling.

  • Mission House Closure: September

    Mission House is getting a refresh! 

    As of September 1, 2025, Mission House will be closed for approximately one month while it undergoes maintenance. The rental space and grounds will get new:

    • septic system
    • patio
    • flooring
    • interior paint

  • Standing with shíshálh Nation

    On behalf of Council and all staff at the District of Sechelt, we extend our deepest condolences to shíshálh Nation following their heartbreaking discovery of more unmarked graves. We recognize the profound pain and grief this brings and we honour the children, families and ancestors whose lives were and continue to be impacted.

    Cooling Centres Open
    With a heat warning in effect, the SCRD has opened two cooling centres: 
    • Sechelt: Sechelt Aquatic Centre (5500 Shorncliffe Ave)
    • Gibsons: Gibsons & Area Community Centre (700 Park Road) 

    Shopping malls, libraries and shaded green spaces like Hackett Park also make for great options. Please check on your neighbours and friends while the heat warning is in effect.
  • Downtown Wildfires

    Two wildfires located downtown in the past week have raised concerns about safety for homes and people. The District of Sechelt is working closely with Sechelt Fire Department, RCMP and other organizations to reduce risks of fire.

  • Campfire Ban in Effect

    A full CAMPFIRE BAN is in effect. This includes:

    • camp fires
    • beach fires above AND below the tide line
    • chimineas
    • fires on public AND private land
    • fireworks
    • backyard fires, etc.
  • Stage 2 Water Restrictions in Effect

    Stage 2 moderate water restrictions are in effect.

    Regulations are in place to promote water conservation and ensure water supply and treatment systems can meet the large seasonal increase in outdoor water use during the summer.

  • 2024 Annual Report

    At their meeting last Wednesday evening, Council received and reviewed the District’s 2024 Annual Report.

    Following a two-week period for public review and input, the published report highlights the District of Sechelt’s actions and accomplishments in advancing Council and corporate strategic goals throughout 2024.

  • Survey: Library/Municipal Hall Renovation

    The District of Sechelt invites residents to share their thoughts on the future of the Sechelt Public Library and Municipal Hall building as part of a planning process that will explore future possibilities. 

    The building requires extensive repairs, including a new building envelope.
