No Pick Up for Blue Bins Containing No-go Items
Beginning Monday, August 19, recycling bins containing items that are not accepted in Sechelt's blue bin recycling will not be collected. The District continues to have higher contamination rates and is at risk of losing funding by Recycle BC. Please check the Waste Wizard for information.
Items not accepted in your blue bin:
- Glass (this is very dangerous for the workers and system)
- Books
- Soft plastics (plastic bags, overwrap, large clear plastic bags containing recycling etc).
- Styrofoam
- Small appliances
- Hard rigid plastics - these are usually products like toys or tupperwear containers.
All items listed above can be recycled at Salish Soils.
If your bin is not collected because it contains some of the items listed above, you will need remove the unacceptable items and wait until the next recycling day or take contents to Salish Soils.
What has the District done to communicate about the higher rates of recycling contamination?
Since December 2023, we have:
- Listed what can and can't be recycled in residential blue bins on the District's website and social media many times
- Direct mailed the flyer above to homes in Sechelt
- Advertised the above flyer in the newspaper three times
- Sent out information via the Sechelt Citizen App
- Warned people by sticking "Oops" tags directly on recycling bins when unacceptable items found.
This will take the diligence of all residents to help reduce Sechelt's recycling contamination, as set out by Recycle BC.
Thank you for doing your part!
